Take Action for Sudan Now

To: Erica Barks-Ruggles, Tom Donilon, Jim Steinberg, Stuart Levy, and Michele Flournoy:

When the National Security Council Deputies Committee met in January to review progress of the Obama Administration's Sudan policy, I expected concrete actions to follow. I was hopeful that the deputies would base their evaluations on facts on the ground, and I expected the U.S. to act decisively in leading other countries to hold those who promote violence in Sudan accountable.

I was disappointed that the administration still appears split on its approach to policy and no concrete outcomes seem to have resulted from the deputies meeting. Violence on the ground in Darfur continues, the Sudanese government is still engaged with proxy militias, and no one has been held accountable for the many war crimes that have occurred to date.

I therefore urge you to escalate real pressures on the parties, call for a strengthened civilian protection mandate for both UNAMID and UNMIS, and deploy more full-time diplomats on the ground in Sudan to accelerate peace efforts. Sudan is entering a make or break period, and U.S. leadership is vital.

Tell President Obama that it is time to act.  He must use his leverage to bring other countries on board and create a credible set of multilateral consequences to continued obstinence of the government of Sudan.
