250-Mile Sudan Freedom Walk Ends with D.C. Rally

Posted by Sally Smith on October 8, 2010

Activists and members of the Sudanese diaspora gathered yesterday afternoon on the lawn of the nation's Capitol for a rally that marked the end of the Sudan Freedom Walk, a 250-mile trek from New York to Washington, D.C. More than 200 people tuned in for the demonstration via the webcast.

The walk, which aimed to "shed light on the referendum in southern Sudan, the genocide being perpetrated against the people of Darfur, and the continuation of slavery and other human rights violations throughout Sudan" was completed by Simon Deng and Dr. Abdel Gabar Adam, who were joined along the way by supporters. Deng, a former slave from Sudan, broke down in tears upon reaching the Capitol lawn. "We don't want war. 3.5 million of our people are dead. That is enough."
