Darfur Fast for Life Recruits on Capitol Hill

Posted by Laura Heaton on May 19, 2009

Some of the prominent members of the growing Darfur Fast for Life movement are taking their message to Capitol Hill today, and they plan to recruit more high profile individuals to fast in solidarity with the people of Darfur and in protest of the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe wrought by the Sudanese government.

Leading today’s event in Washington will be actress and prominent Darfur activist Mia Farrow, whose decision to launch a hunger strike for Darfur last month touched off the creation of a more centralized movement dedicated to raising awareness about the more dire conditions caused by President Omar al-Bashir’s decision to expel aid agencies from Darfur. The online community on the Darfur Fast for Life website shares regular updates on local events, individuals’ own experiences fasting, profiles of Darfurians “fasting without option,” and a running list of the high profile fasters who have joined in.

Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ), who joined the fasting movement last week, is hosting today’s event on Capitol Hill on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus. We’ll bring you an update after the event.
