Darfur10: We need education, peace, dignity, tolerance

Rahma is one of those individuals who can truly light up a room. He's charismatic, energetic, articulate, and has a great sense of humor. As an 18-year-old Darfuri refugee, Rahma has spent half of his young life in Djabal refugee camp in eastern Chad. The Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program has followed Rahma's life and education in Djabal since 2009. We've learned about his family and friends, the challenges of being a refugee, and his aspirations for both his own future and the future of Darfur. Rahma wants to return to Darfur to continue his education and earn a university degree; he talks about becoming a politician or a journalist there.

Over the years as Rahma has grown taller and smarter, he's also grown more aware that his individual future is deeply intertwined with the future of Darfur. More and more, when we speak with Rahma and other young Darfuris like him, they implore us to push the international community to finally bring lasting peace to Darfur. Rahma recently told us: "The problems in Darfur are not easy problems (to solve) because they require cooperation. But we have 10 years of suffering- in education, health, and security. It will not be easy to find peace, but we hope that the U.S. and the international community will help solve this problem. We hope that everything will be good and exist in Darfur- even security, peace, tolerance, dignity." His words here and in the video below show that Rahma is also wise beyond his years.
