Gov. Brown Signs California’s Conflict Minerals Bill

Congratulations to California for being the first state to adopt a conflict minerals bill!

Governor Jerry Brown signed California’s SB 861 into law last weekend, and activists and those concerned about human rights issues should be proud. Voices from all across California came together to organize and to raise awareness of conflict minerals in American products, including in many consumer electronics products. From the vision of California Senator Ellen Corbett in introducing the bill, to Governor Jerry Brown’s decision to sign it into law, the process should inspire leaders and activists around the country to see their state governments as possible partners for Congo advocacy. 

“This legislation is a huge milestone on the path toward peace in Congo,” said Raise Hope for Congo Campaign Manager JD Stier. “California’s unprecedented action for Congo should be held as an example for other states around the country.” Indeed, SB 861 may have created a trend among state legislators; Massachusetts state legislator Martin J. Walsh has a similar bill slated for introduction soon.

“First we saw individuals express their demand for conflict-free products, then universities, cities, and now states—together we are growing a powerful voice calling for peace in Congo,” Stier added.
