Investigate Reports of War Crimes Against the Nuba

As we observe this week’s festivities welcoming South Sudan into the community of nations, we cannot lose sight of the humanitarian crisis and possible war crimes ongoing in Sudan’s South Kordofan state.

In South Kordofan, the Nuba people are fleeing their homes in the tens of thousands as the Sudanese Armed Forces conduct a brutal military assault on their homeland. There are widespread reports that Sudanese forces are bombing, shelling, and executing civilians. The Sudanese government has barred NGOs and the press and is restricting the movement of U.N. personnel.

United Nations personnel must investigate reports of possible war crimes against the Nuba people by Sudanese forces. We cannot not be intimidated by Omar al-Bashir's bullying, or we may find ourselves saying "Never again," again.

Watch the video of a floor speech I gave on July 7 regarding the conflict in South Kordofan.
