The Greatest Silence

I recently spoke at a State Department film screening of The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo along with the film’s director, Lisa Jackson, and the head of our Raise Hope for Congo Campaign, Candice Knezevic. If you have not seen the film, you should.

It is an incredibly powerful and often unsettling piece of work by Lisa – who demonstrated no small measure of personal courage in bringing this work to fruition. Kudos also to the State Department for its willingness to screen the film and share with its employees this unflinching portrait of what is happening to women in eastern Congo. I believe HBO will be showing the film again soon, and they have a good feature page on the film. As Lisa continues to screen the film at festivals around the globe, including for senior Congolese leaders in Kinshasa, learn what you personally can do to help end this tragedy by visiting our Raise Hope for Congo page.

Easy Fundraiser and Educational Advocacy Strategy for Congo

Inspired by John P's and Robin Wright Penn's radio interview and SF Chronicle Op-Ed, I sent an email to many people in my circle of friends, colleagues, and community leaders offering to subsidize the price of their tickets if they would join me at the local film screening. I also offered to donate the subsidy amount to Enough's Raise Hope for Congo Project, if my friends wanted to pay for their own tickets.

I've never done anything quite like this, and I don't yet know how many will take me up on my offer, but I also included links to the Op-Ed and other Enough websites in my email "infotation" (my term for such a blended, information-sharing invitation). I asked those who can't join me at the film screening, to at least take a few minutes to educate themselves and others about this important, heartbreaking topic and inspiring, citically-necessary film and project.

Thank you to all involved.
