U.S. Demands End to Darfur Bombings
The U.S. has demanded an immediate end to all violence in Darfur and a commitment to the peace process under Joint Chief Mediator Djibril Yipènè Bassolé.
In a written statement issued late Tuesday, State Department acting spokesperson Robert Wood said: "The United States condemns the military activity carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in North and South Darfur since January 22, as well as the incursion by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) into Muhajaria and other areas of South Darfur, which resulted in an increase of violence over the last week."
"This fighting and subsequent Government of Sudan bombing campaigns have reportedly resulted in the deaths, injuries and displacements of civilians. The bombing campaigns in particular are a violation of the Darfur Peace Agreement, of the Government of Sudan-initiated ceasefire, and of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions on Darfur."
"We welcome the statement by the Secretary-General condemning these hostilities. We demand that all parties to the conflict, including rebel movements, cease all violence and provocations in Darfur immediately, and commit to the peace process under the leadership of Joint Chief Mediator Djibril Yipènè Bassolé," Mr Wood said.
The statement is the first official statement from the State Department on Darfur since the inauguration of President Obama last week. READ the Statement. More Reports.

Khartoum – Mona Al-Bashir
France announced that it will conduct intensive contacts on the highest levels with all the parties to push the effort aiming at achieving peace in Sudan. Sudanese Ambassador to France, Dr. Sulieman Mustafa stated that they called on France to press on the armed movements, especially Abdulwahid to participate in peace talks. He added that the French concerned parties affirmed that they will conduct contacts with the rebel movements to push them forward to participate in the talks scheduled to take place in Qatar.
In a related development, the AU/UN Joint Mediator, D'jibril Bassole together with the Qatari Foreign State Minister, Ahmed bin Abdallah Al-Mahmoud held talks with the officials in the French Presidency, besides consultations with officials in French Foreign Ministry to push the peace process in Darfur forward.
Ambassador Mustafa expressed optimism over the recent moves hoping that it will lead to having all the conflicting parties sitting together round the negotiation table.
It is to be noted that the AU/UN Joint Mediator arrived in Khartoum yesterday from France to activate peace efforts in Darfur.

What will it take to appoint a high-level envoy to Sudan? Good God!!!
How many more 18-month old and 9-year old children have to be raped before the US stands up and walks the walk?
