Dear Editor,
After years of global outrage over suffering in Sudan, President Obama has released his administration’s policy towards the war torn nation. While the new U.S. policy spells out the need for accountability and verifiable progress by the Sudanese government to fulfill its agreements, many challenges remain. Attacks on civilians are a daily occurrence in southern Sudan, millions of Darfuri refugees remain in the camps, and steps toward a free election and referendum for independence are actively being undermined. The United States government must take real leadership to build a coalition of countries that is willing to utilize pressures on Khartoum when needed. The policy must create real consequences for those who continue to attack civilians and undermine peace.
