Speakers:
Michael VanRooyen
, Co-Director, Harvard Humanitarian Initiative
Jocelyn Kelly, Gender-Based Violence Research Coordinator, Harvard Humanitarian Initiative
Mary Ellsberg, Vice President of Health and Development, International Center for Research on Women

Despite the presence of the United Nations and multiple local and international organizations, rape and sexual violence against women in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to escalate claiming over five million lives to date–the deadliest conflict since World War II. The types of violence and the nature of the perpetrators is difficult to categorize. Additional data must be compiled to better understand these factors, and to improve policy recommendations and program coordination in conflict areas. Drawing from their diverse professional experience, the speakers will discuss patterns of sexual violence and the effects on individuals, families, and communities; and the implications for local, national, and international policymakers.

Michael VanRooyen, co-director of The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, will discuss the motivations and behavior patterns of militia and non-militia perpetrators. Jocelyn Kelly, gender-based violence research coordinator at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, will characterize the crisis of sexual violence in the Eastern DRC and make recommendations for establishing security and community response. Mary Ellsberg, vice president of health and development at the International Center for Research on Women, will offer her thoughts on local, national, and international response and the implications for policymakers.

Featured Contributor:

Dave Eggers, author of the novels A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and What is the What

Featured Author:

Craig Walzer, editor, Out of Exile

With Special Guests:

Abuk Bak Macham, refugee from Southern Sudan and featured subject in Out of Exile.
Franco Majok, one of Sudan's "lost boys"  who recently returned to Sudan to build a school in his native village with donated funds.

Moderated by:

John Prendergast, co-chair of the Enough Project, the Center for American Progress's initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity

Out of Exile brings the crisis in Darfur and other parts of Sudan out of the policy realm and into the lives of people who never meant to carry the label "refugees." Decades of conflicts and persecution have driven millions from their homes in all parts of Sudan. Many thousands more have been enslaved as human spoils of war. In their own words, the narrators of Out of Exile recount their lives before their displacement, the reasons for their flight, and their hopes of someday returning home.

Out of Exile includes the personal stories of 17 Sudanese people, as told to Craig Walzer, a former legal services adviser to Darfuri and other Sudanese refugees in Cairo. They describe life in the major stations on the "refugee railroads": in the desert camps of Khartoum, the underground communities of Cairo, the humanitarian metropolis of Kakuma refugee camp, and the still-growing internally displaced persons camps in Darfur.

Copies of Out of Exile: Narratives From the Abducted and Displaced People of Sudan will be available for purchase. The editor will be available to sign books following the discussion.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) will hold a news conference this Wednesday to announce its recommendations designed to ensure that the fragile peace between the Khartoum government in the Northern and Southern regions is sustained and strengthened.

U.S. leadership is crucial to achieving the gains for peace that have been made to date in Sudan, including the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The CPA ended Africa's longest civil war, one in which two million people lost their lives and four million were driven from their homes. Implementing the CPA has reached a critical stage, with a referendum scheduled to take place this year on the future status of South Sudan in 2011. If the CPA is allowed to unravel, the chances of renewed hostilities between North and South Sudan will greatly increase, and the chances of achieving peace in Darfur will be significantly diminished.

Joining USCIRF will be U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health; U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA)**, co-chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission and a member of the House Appropriations Committee; and John Prendergast, Co-Chair of the Enough Project, which "is helping to build a permanent constituency to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity."

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom was created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 to monitor the status of freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief abroad, as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and related international instruments, and to give independent policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and the Congress. For more information about the Commission, see www.uscirf.gov.
