Out of Exile brings the crisis in Darfur and other parts of Sudan out of the policy realm and into the lives of people who never meant to carry the label "\;refugees."\; Decades of conflicts and persecution have driven millions from their homes in all parts of Sudan. Many thousands more have been enslaved as human spoils of war. In their own words\, the narrators of Out of Exile recount their lives before their displacement\, the reasons for their flight\, and their hopes of someday returning home.

Out of Exile includes the personal stories of 17 Sudanese people\, as told to Craig Walzer\, a former legal services adviser to Darfuri and other Sudanese refugees in Cairo. They describe life in the major stations on the "\;refugee railroads"\;\: in the desert camps of Khartoum\, the underground communities of Cairo\, the humanitarian metropolis of Kakuma refugee camp\, and the still-growing internally displaced persons camps in Darfur.

Copies of Out of Exile\: Narratives From the Abducted and Displaced People of Sudan will be available for purchase. The editor will be available to sign books following the discussion.

WASHINGTON\, D.C. - The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) will hold a news conference this Wednesday to announce its recommendations designed to ensure that the fragile peace between the Khartoum government in the Northern and Southern regions is sustained and strengthened.

U.S. leadership is crucial to achieving the gains for peace that have been made to date in Sudan\, including the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The CPA ended Africa's longest civil war\, one in which two million people lost their lives and four million were driven from their homes. Implementing the CPA has reached a critical stage\, with a referendum scheduled to take place this year on the future status of South Sudan in 2011. If the CPA is allowed to unravel\, the chances of renewed hostilities between North and South Sudan will greatly increase\, and the chances of achieving peace in Darfur will be significantly diminished.

Joining USCIRF will be U.S. Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ)\, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health\; U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA)**\, co-chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission and a member of the House Appropriations Committee\; and John Prendergast\, Co-Chair of the Enough Project\, which "\;is helping to build a permanent constituency to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity."\;

John Prendergast

&ldquo\;The Darfur Genocide\: \;What You Can Do To Help End It&rdquo\;

John Prendergast\, co-author of Not On Our Watch\: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond\, will speak at the University of Vermont on Monday\, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Maple Ballroom of the Dudley H. Davis Center. His presentation is titled "\;The Darfur Genocide\: What You Can Do to Help End It."\;

Prendergast is co-chair of the Enough Project\, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity. He is an internationally renowned activist\, former government official\, and the author of eight books on Africa\, including the above New York Times bestseller that he co-wrote with actor Don Cheadle\, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Hotel Rwanda.

While on campus Prendergast will address classes\, meet with UVM STAND (Students Taking Action Now\: Darfur)\, and other individuals and groups seeking to help find a solution to international conflicts\, especially those in Darfur and the Congo. He will also be available to speak to the media from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Old Mill\, Room 523.

During the Clinton administration Prendergast served as the National Security Council's director of African affairs and was special advisor at the Department of State. With NBA stars Tracy McGrady and Derek Fisher\, he co-founded the Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program\, which connects schools in the United States with schools in the Darfur refugee camps.

Prendergast's op-eds have appeared in The New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, and USA Today\, and he has been profiled in Vanity Fair\, Men's Vogue\, the Washington Post\, and Philadelphia Inquirer. Prendergast is a visiting professor at the University of San Diego and the American University in Cairo.

The Enough Project\, in partnership with STAND\, hosts a speakers&rsquo\; tour on college campuses to educate students about the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the resulting epidemic of sexual violence against women and girls.
