South Sudan Crisis: Root Causes & Approaches for Resolution

April 8, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Since December 2013, over 1 million have been forcibly displaced and over 20,000 people have been killed in South Sudan in the country's newest conflict. Mediation efforts have failed to establish any sustainable peace. The conflict threatens the social fabric of South Sudanese society as well as the stability of the entire East African region. Join in a discussion with South Sudanese and other experts about the root causes of the conflict and approaches for its resolution. Food will be provided.

Experts include:

  • Hon. Sophia Pal Gai – Former Member of South Sudan's Parliament
  • Hon. Agnes Nyoka – Former Member of South Sudan's Parliament and Activist
  • Dr. Joseph Deng Malual – Social Worker for South Sudan's "Lost Boys"
  • Omer Ismail – Senior Policy Advisor at Enough Project
  • Moderated by Meghan Stewart – Vice President of Public International Law & Policy Group

This event is sponsored by Creative Peace Initiatives (CPI), an established student organization at American University whose goal is to promote creative peacebuilding initiatives.
