Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will announce on Oct. 19 the results of a months-long review of U.S. strategy toward ending the conflict in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region.
Clinton, along with Scott Gration, the U.S. special envoy to Sudan, and Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, will make the announcement in Washington, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said.
In August, anti-genocide groups placed advertisements in newspapers urging President Barack Obama’s administration to take tough action to end the crisis in Darfur, where government forces and rebel groups have been fighting since 2003. The ad campaign followed comments by Gration that a more conciliatory approach to Sudan may be forthcoming.
