The National Security Council Deputies Committee met in January to review progress of the Obama Administration's Sudan policy. Since the meeting, the administration remains split on its approach to Sudan policy. Violence on the ground in Darfur continues and no one has been held accountable for the many war crimes that have occurred.

All signs indicate that Sudan, Africa’s largest state, will very soon split in two—either peacefully or violently. In a self-determination referendum scheduled for January 2011, the people of southern Sudan are widely expected to vote for separation from the north.
